5 Mixed Media Techniques to Play With the Next Time You’re in the Studio:

  1. Cut And Paste! You can cut elements that capture your interest. And/Or choose background objects that do the same. How can you use layers to create interest?

2. Create interest and curiosity by hiding or reavaling a focal point with layers. You can do this by:

  • Playing with materials that are translucent
  • Using windows to create interaction of focus
  • Tape as w ay to create a “door” or flip tab to something behind

3. Exploring the objects in your surroundings and integrating them into your collage provides a sense of place within your artwork. Can you find:

  • a receipt?
  • a wrapper?
  • a piece of nature?
  • napkin?

4. You can create texture out of almost anything! Try carving a stamp out of:

  • cardboard
  • a foam takeout container
  • an old eraser
  • linocut block
  • linoleum

Don’t feel like carving? use what you got! Try:

  • an old shoe
  • a head of cabbage cut in half
  • a leaf or flower

5. Everyone can draw! You can use drawing as markmaking as a way to add depth or draw focus in your collage. Try:

  • doodling for 10 seconds
  • tracing the outline of something in your art
  • Add motion with !!! lines !!!
  • Draw an arrow
  • Write a word
  • Create a secret signature
  • Write a note
  • Draw repeating shapes (circle, X, heart, stars)
  • Self portrait in 10 seconds

How do you creatively play? Leave your experiments in the comments!

Cheers,

Meg <3
